Frequently asked questions
A few friendly answers about how Avireum works: your tree, your family, and staying in touch.
What is Avireum?
Avireum is a private family tree that's actually nice to look at. Instead of a flat chart of names and dates, you get a tree you can click around: everyone's photos, how they're related, the news they've shared. It's built to be easy for grandparents and grandkids alike.
How do I join Avireum? Can anyone sign up?
Avireum is invite-only, so you join through an invitation from a family member who is already on the tree. There is no open public sign-up: a relative adds you to the tree and sends you an invite link, and you use that link to claim your place and set up your profile. If no one has invited you yet, you can request to join from the Avireum home page.
What is a family tree in Avireum, and what is a “constellation”?
In Avireum, your family tree is everyone you have added and how they are related to one another. The constellation is one of Avireum’s ways to view that tree: a softly animated, star-map style layout where each person is a node and the lines between them trace your relationships. Avireum also offers a simpler pedigree-style layout. Both views show the same family; the constellation is just a more playful, explorable one. Tap any person to pivot the view onto them and see their immediate family.
Why don’t some relatives I added show up near me on the Avireum tree?
Avireum places people by how they connect to you through the relatives already on your tree. If the family members who link a more distant relative to you aren’t on the tree yet, Avireum can’t place that person. Add the connecting relative first, then attach them. Relatives who are connected will always appear, even far-flung ones (grouped as “Extended family”), so there’s no shallow cut-off. When you upload a list or a genealogy (GEDCOM) file, anyone Avireum can’t connect to you is shown as “needs a connector first” rather than dropped silently, so you always know exactly who still needs a link.
How do invitations work in Avireum?
The simplest order in Avireum is: add them to your tree first, then send the invite. That way they claim the place you already made for them instead of starting a separate tree. You can add a family member with or without their email; once they're on the tree, invite them from their card or the invite page and they get a friendly link that lets them claim their spot and set up their own profile. People who have already claimed their spot show a small green dot on their card. Unclaimed living relatives show an Invite link so you can nudge them to join whenever you like. For a fuller walkthrough, including what happens if someone signs up on their own, see Building your family tree.
Who can see what on Avireum? How is my privacy protected?
Avireum is private by default. Your tree and the people on it are visible only to the family members who share that tree, not to the public and not to search engines. You decide who to invite. Sensitive details stay within your family circle, and a public shareable view (if you ever choose to create one in Avireum) only shows what you have explicitly opted to share. If you are unsure, the safe assumption is: only your family sees your family.
What are Messages in Avireum?
Messages in Avireum are private 1:1 conversations between family members who share a tree. Think of Messages as a direct line to one relative at a time, like texting your cousin or your grandmother inside Avireum. A message stays between you and the one person you are writing to, unlike Announcements, which the whole family sees. Use Messages for the small, personal notes that do not belong on the family-wide feed.
What are Announcements in Avireum?
Announcements in Avireum are short updates you share with your whole family tree, the family-wide feed. New baby, a move, a graduation, “thinking of you all” — anything you want everyone in the family to see. You can mention specific relatives in an Announcement, and family members can react and respond. If you want to reach just one person instead, use Messages, Avireum’s private 1:1 line.
What are Memories in Avireum?
Memories in Avireum are where you keep the stories, photos, and moments that matter: the things you want to remember and pass on. Memories live alongside your family tree so future generations can find them. Memories are a lovely way to honor the people who came before and capture the everyday moments you do not want to forget.
What is karma in Avireum?
Karma in Avireum is a small way of saying thanks to the people who keep the family tree growing: adding relatives, sharing memories, welcoming new members. Nobody is keeping score, and there is no leaderboard to climb.
How do I edit my profile in Avireum?
To edit your profile in Avireum, open your own card on the tree (or visit your person page) and choose Edit. You can update your name, photo, date of birth, where you live, and other details. You can edit your own profile any time; you can also edit relatives you added who have not yet claimed their own account. Once someone claims their spot on the tree, they take over editing their own details.
Can I change the theme in Avireum?
Yes. Avireum offers several nature-inspired themes (each tied to a tree species) that recolor your whole experience: backgrounds, accents, and the constellation itself. Pick the theme that feels most like home; you can change it whenever you like from your Avireum settings, and it follows you across the app.
How do I leave a birthday message in Avireum?
When a family member has a birthday, the easiest way to celebrate in Avireum is to send them a private note through Messages, a personal 1:1 hello just for them. If you would rather have the whole family join in, post a quick Announcement and mention the birthday person so everyone can chime in.
Can I add pets to the Avireum tree?
Yes. In Avireum, pets are family too. You can add companions and attach them to their owner. In the constellation, pets appear as a little paw badge on their person’s card, and they get a loving place in that person’s details. Pets who have passed keep their place on the tree, the same way Avireum honors any loved one who is no longer with us.
Is there an Avireum app for my phone?
Yes. Avireum has an iPhone app on the App Store, and it also works in any web browser on your phone or computer. An Android app is in review as of July 2026 and is not available yet. However you open Avireum, you sign in with the same account and see the same family tree.
Can I export my data or delete my Avireum account?
Yes. In Avireum you can request an export of your data, and you can ask to close your account, both from your account settings. Your family’s information belongs to you. If you need help with either, reach out using the contact details at the bottom of this page and the Avireum team will walk you through it.
